ATOMS, MOLECULES & ELEMENTS

licensed-image.jpg

Hi Scientists!

Get ready to explore the tiny building blocks that make up everything around us—even YOU! In this unit, we’ll learn about atoms, molecules, and elements in a fun and easy way.

  • Atoms are the smallest pieces of matter. Everything you see—air, water, trees, animals, and people—is made of atoms!

  • When atoms join together, they make molecules. For example, water is made when two hydrogen atoms join with one oxygen atom to make a water molecule!

  • Elements are types of atoms. There are over 100 different kinds of elements, and each one has a special name and symbol. Some you may already know, like oxygen and gold!

You’ll be watching some cool videos, reading about atoms, and doing fun activities and worksheets. Don’t worry—this isn’t hard. It's like being a science detective!

By the end of this unit, you’ll understand what everything is made of and why science is super cool. Have fun exploring!

Introduction Atoms, Molecules, and Elements

We are using the video game “Bond Breaker” as a supplemental educational resource for students because it is both highly engaging and scientifically credible.

“Bond Breaker” is a puzzle-based video game developed by TestTubeGames, in collaboration with scientists from the CaSTL research center at the University of California, Irvine. What makes this resource especially valuable is that it’s based on real atomic physics.

In the game, students interact with protons, molecules, and lasers to solve puzzles, all while learning about important scientific principles in a hands-on, interactive way. The collaboration with university-level researchers ensures that the concepts presented are accurate and aligned with current scientific understanding.

Because of its strong educational value and credible scientific foundation, “Bond Breaker” is an excellent tool for introducing students to complex topics like atoms, molecules, and chemical bonds in a way that is fun and accessible.
